The Heritage Breed That Makes People Have to Stop and Look.....
The Belted Galloway, or Belties, is a heritage breed developed in Celtic Scotland in the 11th century. In the US, the Belties is a true niche breed. The total US Belted Galloway herd is estimated at a little over 12,000 head. The total herd size of cattle in the United States (all cattle and calves on farms) was 86.2 million head as of January 1, 2026, according to the USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) Cattle report. This represents a slight decline of about 0.3–0.4% from 86.5 million head on January 1, 2025, and marks the lowest total U.S. cattle inventory in 75 years (since 1951). The industry remains in a prolonged contraction phase of the cattle cycle. Concentrations of the Beltie are found in the North East and now in the Midwest and South, even Tecumseh, Oklahoma!
Most Beltie ranchers practice grass feeding to some degree. The Belted Galloways are known for their ability to produce delicious, tender beef solely from pasture grazing. Belted Galloway beef has 46% fewer calories and 68% lower total fat values than average USDA inspected beef. Visit the Belted Galloway breed association website at http://beltie.org/beefstudy.html to learn more about all of the nutritional benefits of Belted Galloway beef. We are proud members of the Belted Galloway Society and to be working to expand this rare breed throughout the country.
Our cattle thrive on natural pasture, consuming what the Good Lord created for them to eat such as Bermuda and prairie grass, clovers and legumes. For optimum health and quality, they are raised in a low stress environment with every consideration given to their overall well being. There is tremendous growth occurring in the grass fed beef business. While the grass fed segment only makes up about 0.3% of the total US beef market, annual growth is over 20% per year. Grass-finished beef is now common at premium grocers and on the menus of top chef’s. Grass-finished beef is naturally leaner and healthier compared to grain-fed beef in confined feedlots. Meat from grass-fed cattle has less total fat, saturated fat, calories, and cholesterol. It has more vitamin E and C, beta carotene and health-producing fats such as Omega 3’s and Conjugated Linoleic Acid (CLA’s); these CLA's are the key to fighting cancers. We KNOW grass-finished beef is not only delicious and healthy, but farming cattle in this way is beneficial to the animals themselves and the environment.
While feedlot cattle develop their flavor from fat that comes from the grains which the cows do not fully process into muscle in the confinement of a feedlot, grass-finished cattle develop their flavor from the quality of the grasses they eat and by getting the appropriate amounts of exercise to build muscle. We believe that the combination of our Belted Galloway breed plus the superior grass-finished diet yields a superior tasting and nutritional beef product that can't be matched commercially. We are happy to provide our tender and flavorful beef year round. We sell our grass-fed beef by the side, the half-side (quarter beef), and premium ground beef by the pound from our farm in Tecumseh, OK. We are also currently taking orders for the 2026 spring season. Fill out our contact page to make sure that you secure your summer beef for your family.
